- Best new iPhone gets 6.1-inch OLED screen
- Energy-efficient ProMotion – the screen has twice the refresh rate

- Camera gets better ultra-wide angle lens
- iPhone 13 Pro release expected on September 24, 2021 , presentation on September 14

Screen: smaller notch
2021 promises to be a big year for the iPhone screen. The rumor circuit believes that Apple will finally make the notch hated by much smaller. That is good news for iPhone users, because this gives you proportionally more screen space at your disposal, without the housing growing with it.
Apple is said to have figured out how to pack all Face ID facial recognition sensors more compactly into the notch. The iPhone 13 Pro is rumored to be slightly thicker. Renders from MacRumors show that the device is about 0.17 millimeters larger.
ProMotion display for iPhone 13 Pro
The iPhone 13 Pro would also get a ProMotion screen. We know this display type from the iPad Pro and its distinguishing feature is a high refresh rate of 120Hz. This means that the pixels in the screen refresh 120 times per second. For reference, the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) refresh rate is 60Hz, so 60 times per second.
If this rumor is true, the screen of the best new iPhone of 2021 will therefore be much ‘smoother’. Animations roll smoothly across the screen and games also get a graphic refresh.
We do hope that Apple makes the refresh rate-adaptive because a high refresh rate puts a lot of pressure on the battery. In any case, the website DigiTimes claims that the iPhone 13 Pro (and Pro Max) will have an energy-efficient screen. This display would use fifteen to twenty percent less power than the entry-level model, the iPhone 13.
The screen that never goes to sleep
We already know the last expected screen improvement from the Apple Watch. Apple’s watch has a so-called always-on screen and this display is rumored to make the switch to iPhones. As you might expect, an always-on screen is always on, albeit in a minimal way so as not to consume too much power.
The advantage of this is that you can always read the time or check incoming messages, without having to unlock the screen. It is also a possibility that you can place widgets on the ‘sleep screen’. That way you can see, for example, where your car is parked or which song you are currently listening to.
Touch ID: fingerprint scanner returns
Do you miss Touch ID? Then we might have good news for you because Apple would give the physical fingerprint scanner a comeback with the iPhone 13 series. However, the scanner is no longer in a button but incorporated in the screen. So you unlock the device by placing your finger on the display.
We hear this rumor almost every year and iPhone readers usually respond enthusiastically. Not surprising, because except for the iPhone SE, all iPhones of recent years did not have Touch ID. Instead, you have to unlock the devices with a Face ID (a face scan), or an ‘old-fashioned’ code.
The camera is subtly enhanced
The iPhone camera will take a gap year in 2021 and will mainly dot the i’s. At least, if we are to believe the rumors. Most insiders claim that Apple is largely sticking to the iPhone 12 Pro’s camera setup. If this is correct, the iPhone 13 Pro will have a triple camera on the back.
